Introduction
The Valhalla Run is StreetSafari's first Scandanavian event.
The Run is scheduled for August 18 to August 22, 2008.
Event details are still under active development and route specifics are subject to change. Confirmed teams receive latest updates directly.
Night 0 - August 17 - Copenhagen, Denmark
The Valhalla Run starts in the beautiful Copenhagen, breaking from our traditional Calais start.
Quite simply, Calais is 800 miles away and not a very practical starting point for this particular route. Duh.
So be prepared to put that in your planning!
Day 1 - August 18 - Copenhagen to Oslo, Norway
The event heads directly to Sweden over the Oresund Bridge which links the two countries.
The Oresund Bridge has one of the longest cable stayed spans in the world. Which is nice. We like things that are "biggest", "highest", "longest" and such as that, you know.
We follow the entire western shore of the Kattegat and Skagerrak straits before arriving in Norway.
The day will be around 370 miles long, ending in Oslo.
Day 2 - August 19 - Oslo to Kristiansund
Today we press ever northward, destined for the Arctic Ocean. Along the way we climb up and over the epic Trollstigen (Troll Ladder) pass.
Once we've descended the ladder, it's on to an evening in the historical islet town of Kristiansund.
Some historians date this settlement back to 8000BC, making it almost as ancient as some of the cars we've seen over the years.
Day 3 - August 20 - Kristiansund to Umeå, Sweden
Today we head cross country, and leave Norway for Sweden once again. If they'll have us back, that is.
This is a long, long day, where the day the sun doesn't go down, and the road keeps going. 500 miles cross country take us back to Sweden and the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia, the northern part of the Baltic Sea.
For those of you uncertain as to what to pack, consider that we will be about 250 miles south of the Arctic Circle at this point.
Brrrrr.
As Umeå is considered to be the cultural capital of northern Sweden, we feel it's a great opportunity to soak a bit of that up.
We're all up for culture, you know, and can stand all of it that we can get.
Day 4 - August 21 - Umeå to Kuopio, Finland
Woohooo yet another country! Who knew there were so many at the top of the world?
This is a comparably easy day with a ferry crossing to Finland and then a drive to the middle of the lakes.
Returning to lakes and forests provides a big change in scenery and we also
get to see why Finland breeds such world champion drivers.
Day 5 - August 22 - End in Helsinki
